St. Joan de les Abadesses

The village of Sant Joan de les Abadesses is located at the channel of the river Ter in the Ripolles region.

There is a medieval Castle which gave its name to the village.

The architectonical heritage of the village is varied. Highlights are the monastery founded by Guifré el Pilós at the end of the X century and the Gothic Pont Vell (old bridge).

The former railway line which transported iron and charcoal from the Ogassa mines is now a “Via Verde” (cycling or footpath) of 12 km from St Joan to Ripoll.

Sant Joan is the departure point for excursions to the Serra Cabellera where there is the peak of the mountain Taga ( 2038m).
